Luis Urribarri (b. 1986, Maracaibo, Venezuela) presents his first solo exhibition at Laverdin Gallery, on view December 5, 2019 – January 3, 2020. space/space is an expressive homage to the rigor of architectural precision, ultimately as an invitation to a teleportative experience. The seventeen works collectively demonstrate a considered command of physical space while embracing the escapist allure that is characteristic of Urribarri’s oeuvre at large.

Expanding from his practice mainly devoted to the painting tradition, here, Urribarri debuts his first ventures into sculpture. Through plaster, marble, and stone, he poses the natural and manmade as two contrasting yet complementary forces. Tension is put into play in many of the works presented, specifically in the new twenty-four-piece painting Lunar Time, which represents the passage of a day. Drawing from his personal relationship with time, he explores the coexistence of the pragmatic and the daydreamed through a lunar lens. This meditation on the productive capacity of nothingness sits at the conceptual core of Urribarri’s practice.

space/space shows an organic evolution and harmony between two- and three-dimensional expression, with light as the unifier. To Urribarri, light is movement. His considered use of it in his work allows the viewer to travel across imagined topography, creating a world wherein each viewer’s personal perspective drives an individual journey.
